Meaningful talk mean a lot

According to the findings of a new research, it has been established that conversations which have substance go a long way in making people happy. Matthias Mehl who teaches psychology at the University of Arizona believes that though small talk helps a great deal in smooth functioning of the society, it is those who have more meaningful conversation are the ones who are much happier.

The study

The study was conducted on 79 men and women with the help of a portable device which is known as the electronically activated recorder. The device routinely recorded little parts of the conversation of these people as they carried out their daily work. The study was conducted for a period of four days. The entire recordings were then classified as small talk or meaningful conversation.

Well-being

The tests were an evaluation of the personality and the well-being of the participants. Mehl and has team found out that the heights of well-being was higher in those who spent more time chatting with others. Those participants who were involved in substantive conversations were comparatively much happier. The high percentage of men involved in serious discussions was also a little surprising as it is generally believed that women are the ones who are more into deep conversations.

Final Words

The study thus had an interesting conclusion as it showed that substantive conversation can increase the level of happiness among people. This is evident from the fact that you would always find lack of meaningful conversations in any troubled relationships. So although small talk can help you gel well with others, it is the meaningful conversations that would ensure that you are well and truly happy.
